Promoting Self-help in the Community within mental health:
The Community Development Worker Service aims to help to develop a range of quality resources, accurate information and holistic services for people from black or minority ethnic communities, including people who either have refugee status in Britain or who are seeking asylum in the Country, with a mental health problem.
The Service supports black and minority ethnic (BME) communities to take advantage of self-development opportunities by initiating, supporting and aiding the development of a range of services to help reduce the incidence of social exclusion. The Service will also provide a forum to assist the development of health and social care services that ensure equality of access for people from BME communities.
The 4 areas the Community Development Worker working on are:
Change Agent: CDW identified the community needs on a continuous basis and in partnerships develop new ways of tackling those issues. Innovative and culturally appropriate services are developed. The CDW continuously communicated with major mental health service providers to ensure that the overall strategy is in line with the needs of the BME communities
Access Facilitator: CDW helped people to access different services (e.g. housing, employment, health and education) through development of new services, partnership operations and referrals. CDW encouraged the community to access other services and work with service providers to facilitate access in a more culturally and linguistically appropriate ways.
Service Developer: The CDW provided appropriate training and support to its internal staff and volunteers along with other external service providers to improve the knowledge of the community that has been affected by mental health.
Capacity Builder: The CDW worked with other BME community groups and other voluntary organisations to empower them to tackle the mental health issues more positively and ensured that the organisations are inclusive within the wider society.CDW supported the community to volunteer and represent their community hence promote leadership within the society
